Aftermath photos can be found here: goo.gl Video of an accident that happened in Australia in 2008 at the Wesfarmers Curragh coal mine in central Queensland. The official report cited operator error, and rumor has it the operator was inexperienced and pulled the wrong lever and allowed the winch to go into free-fall. He tried to catch it on the drum brake but that overheated, exploded and caught fire as you can see. The dragline boom was being lowered for maintenance, and as you can see the correct radius hadn’t been chosen to let the drag line boom clear the M4600-based Transilift boom. The operator suffered minor injuries.

Lattice boom cranes don’t like to get dropped…
fking stupid
Do that again, please!
Whoa!!! They’re DEFINITELY gonna notice that…
@dougspair Nah mate affraid I dont have much more info about the accident, I’m sure if you googled it there would be some websites with a breakdown of what really happened
@FordMan2007 I base my comments here on experience, and 64 years of accumulated observations, and I’m no ‘expert’ on anything, and don’t claim to be. Also I try to learn something new every day, large or small. What might make me feel important is if someone came to me for advice or help, or asked to see pics of work I’ve done, or the 52 foot bridge I built.
You know anything more about this drag-line accident? I can hear, that apparently the winch/brake failed on the crane to the right?
@dougspair Yeah everyone acts like an expert when there sitting in their arm chair at home browsing the net, I guess it gives them some sort of a feeling of importance and knowledge, they are only fooling themselves.
@FordMan2007 I have lived in California, USA the last 60 years of my 64, and see little of anything large except a few tower cranes on building sites. New hospital add-on here right now, 2 towers. I did buy a book a few years ago called Large Earth- moving equipment. Has all the various stuff, crawlers, ‘walkers’ Bucyrus, Euclid, Cat, Manitowoc. Pics of Big Muskie in there.
I’ve noticed that a lot of people on youtube are good at attacking others who can’t fight back. Physically, that is.
if you all just look to the right of the screen. you will see the smock from the big red crane and stuff flying up in the air. its clear that the brakes on the cable drums failed?
@dougspair It’s cool man no harm done, not gunna crucify you for not knowing, like half the fuckwitts on youtube would do. Im no expert in this field but I believe to move around it walks, big as round bed it sits on to rotate then 2 rectangular pads raise and lower and move back and forth to lift and move the whole unit, about 3 meters at a time, very slow process.
@FordMan2007 Ok, you are correct, I saw 4-5 cranes 1 dragline. I’d have known the difference if I’d seen the shovel/bucket. I’m not that familiar with cranes and such, yet. But I’m learning. Although that’s a very large drag-line, and it does look like the stuff i’ve seen here in the USA.Is it a walker, or crawler? Thanks for the info!
Bet ya a whole fuck load of people were lookin for new jobs after this
@dougspair It’s a dragline bro lol
